Job hours:  Summer hours are 8-12, Monday through Thursday; regular term hours are 8-12 &1-3, Monday through Friday.  Hours may be subject to change.

Education:  Bachelor's degree required.  Three years of teaching experience preferred.

Salary:  $15 per hour depending on education, experience, and training.

Duties and responsibilities:

This person is primarily responsible for delivering effective instruction to the adult education co-op's participants in order to produce improved student performance with regard to learner outcomes for adult education and systematically enhance program outcomes.

 

Classroom

·         Provides structured, pre-planned instruction in the basic core curriculum courses required for successful transition of students according to instructional level assigned

 

·         Is familiar with and performs within the guidelines of the Adult Education Instructor Proficiencies.

 

·         Uses holistic instructional practices based on meaningful life situations that reflect learners’ needs and interests.

 

·         Provides instruction to learners with diverse levels of proficiency by utilizing flexible grouping for learner collaboration and interactive learning.

 

·         Provides integrated listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities in meaningful classroom activities that encompass everyday life skills relevant to adult student needs.

 

·         Consistently addresses the use of English in the classroom and maintains English as the primary language of the classroom.

 

·         Develops appropriate educational lesson plans to remedy educational deficiencies and strengthen academic achievement of assigned students.  Pre-prepared lesson plans and reinforcement material are required to be on file and available for review by the immediate supervisor/Director

 

·         Maintains and upkeeps student portfolios for all students enrolled throughout the year.  (Inclusive of student intake, orientation documentation, long and short-term goals, growth and transition plan, assessment results, writing samples, computer analyses, and other student work samples, which measure progress).

 

·         Maintains records of attendance and evaluation of student progress on a monthly basis, and as required by the program.

 

·         Assembles and/or develops such learning materials and resources as needed to achieve instructional objectives.  

 

·         Completes and submits all required reports in a timely manner in the format required by the program.

 

·         Facilitates learning using processes consistent with how adults learn, and supported by research and knowledge of effective practices.

 

·         Adapts and may develop curricula and/or revise instructional plans as necessitated by results of ongoing, holistic, learner-centered assessment.

 

·         Implements, and if necessary, develops curricula consistent with current adult learning and supported by research and knowledge of effective practices.

 

·         Is knowledgeable of and uses specific instructional techniques such as language experience approach (LEA), meta-cognitive and problem-solving strategies, and other instructional techniques, particularly those presented in current year teacher-training sessions.

 

·         Collaboratively develops, with students, instructional activities to address learners’ individual goals and needs.

 

·         Facilitates the development of independent problem solvers and thinkers by utilizing critical thinking skills instruction and providing opportunities for students to participate in life skills situations.

 

·         Supervises and serves as a supervising teacher to para-professionals and/or non-degreed personnel assigned to assist in the classroom, as needed.

 

Professional Development

·         Is cognizant of and assures compliance with the programs minimum professional development requirements for the current program year.

 

·         Actively participates in and contributes to the planning of professional development for the adult education program.

 

Recruitment and Retention of Students

·         Contributes to student recruitment using appropriate strategies based on identified needs and as set forth in the program plan.

 

·         Facilitates learner retention in the program to ensure achievement of goals and successful transitions.

 

·         Is knowledgeable of community resources and support services and assists students in

accessing these services.

 

·         Focuses curriculum and instruction on learner outcomes to address academic competencies needed for successful transition to further education, workforce, and personal development, and life-long learning.

 

Professionalism

·         Demonstrates a genuine interest in the program and the student and maintains a professional attitude at all times.

 

·         Exhibits a positive attitude towards the overall adult education program, and adapts to new policies and techniques as necessary, demonstrating the ability to anticipate program needs and act accordingly in a self-directed manner.

 

·         Collaborates as a team member with the director, the Regional Assessment Coordinator, Regional Assessors, other instructional staff, center supervisors, and administrative support staff.

 

·         Is cognizant of and adheres to the program’s Performance Standards for the current year.

 

·         Facilitates collaborative program planning processes based on needs assessment and program evaluation results.

 

General

·         Reports directly to the center supervisor or other key person designated by the Director.

 

·         Reports to educational site before class begins and remains until the last student leaves the premises.

 

·         Maintains hours established by the college, (including lunch schedules) and as assigned by immediate supervisor with the approval of the Director.

 

·         Follows required rules, regulations, and safety procedures as outlined in the college employee handbook.

 

·         Performs other duties as assigned by the center supervisor and as deemed necessary by the co-op director.

 

·         Lifts, carries, drags, holds, pushes or pulls up to 20 pounds of materials or related items as necessary for performance of assigned duties

 

·         Performs all other functions as assigned by immediate Supervisor/Director for efficient operation of the program.  Work rules, codes of conduct and other policies are part of the essential functions of the job, and are addressed in the SWTJC policies and regulations.
